another day in berlin

the sun has rotated 37 times around our local star since i first breathed a gulp of air on this wonderful planet. i am celebrating by not going into work, reading on the balcony, running through berlin's parks and helping ant finish off her thesis.

Haile Gebrselassi won the Berlin Marathon yesterday and broke his previous world record. aparently he is 35, so i guess that means i am also approximately at my physical peak. berlin is relatively flat and if i start training (and possibly find a few sneaky shortcuts) i reckon i can run a sub-2 hour marathon next year...

Für die Berliner: Montag ist ein schlechter Tag ein Geburtstag zu feiern, deswegen Trinken und Tanzen findet am Tag der Deutschen Einheit statt.

Mauerpark - Berlin: minefield of music

The Mauerpark in Berlin is one of my favourite locations to sit and enjoy the sunset. The Berlin wall used to run through this area dividing the city into east and west. A former minefield has been transformed into a dynamic public space. People come play intruments, kick a football, drink a beer and of course spraypaint the wall next to the stadium.

Fuchsbau

If I were in Australia this would be a sure sign that a wombat was living nearby. If I were in New Zealand it would most likely be a hobbit-hole. Since I am in Germany, I suspect that it belongs to a fox. Is this a fox's den? I stumbled across this burrow on a lunchbreak in Teltow, Germany. It is in a vacant lot surrounded by a stand of trees near a main road. There are no paw prints visible but it had recently rained. Fuchsbau is German for fox hole.
